Every tattoo changes as it ages, and that’s completely normal. Tattoo ink sits beneath the surface of your skin, so as your skin naturally renews, stretches and loses elasticity over the years, the tattoo softens slightly. This happens regardless of the style, artist or quality of the tattoo.

Some areas of the body naturally experience more movement, friction and sun exposure than others. That’s why we always consider where a tattoo will be placed before recommending the size, level of detail and overall design. It’s all part of creating a tattoo that will continue to look its best for years to come.
Why Does Size Matter?
One of the most common pieces of advice we give is to make a tattoo slightly larger. This isn’t because we can’t tattoo it smaller, it’s because we’re thinking about how it will look years from now, not just on the day it’s finished.
As tattoos age, fine lines naturally become slightly wider. If those lines are too close together from the beginning, they can gradually blur into one another and lose definition. Giving the design a little more space allows each element to remain clear for much longer.
What Happens to Fine Details?
Tiny lettering, delicate florals and highly detailed designs can look incredibly sharp when they’re fresh. However, the smaller and more detailed a tattoo is, the less room there is for those details to age naturally.
This doesn’t mean you can’t have a detailed tattoo, it simply means the design needs to be planned with longevity in mind. Sometimes a small increase in size or a slight simplification of the artwork can make a huge difference to how it looks five, ten or even twenty years later.
Does Placement Make a Difference?
Yes. Where your tattoo is placed can have a significant impact on how it changes over time. Different areas of the body age differently, and some experience more movement, friction, stretching or sun exposure than others.
