WHY YOUR PIERCING STARTS WITH A LONGER BAR

6th June 2025 – Piercings

One of the most common questions I get as a piercer is: “Why is the bar so long?” The answer is simple — your body needs room to heal! I use longer bars in fresh piercings to allow space for natural swelling and movement. Swelling is your body’s normal response to a new piercing, and giving it room ensures comfort and reduces the risk of the jewellery embedding into the skin or causing unnecessary irritation. A little extra length helps your piercing heal safely and minimises complications in those early stages.

Once the initial swelling goes down—usually after a few weeks—it’s crucial to come back for a downsize. This means swapping the longer bar for a shorter one that fits your healed tissue better. Downsizing prevents issues like snagging, migration, and unnecessary pressure that can lead to bumps or scarring. It also just feels more comfortable! If you’re unsure whether you’re ready for a downsize, I’m always happy to check in and guide you through it.

Thanks for trusting me with your piercings—I’m here to keep them looking great and healing well!
